Topic: Btvs Season 6

Title: Smashed

Written by: Drew Z. Greenberg.

Amy... Elizabeth Anne Allen.
Jonathan... Danny Strong.
Andrew... Tom Lenk.
Warren... Adam Busch.

Summary:

Willow manages to turn Amy back to human and together the two witches start having fun with magic. Meanwhile Spike suspects that his chip doesn't work anymore.

Okay, this isn't a complete waste of time episode even though it was the start of the four episodes of boredom piece of the sixth season. There are a lot of things happening, but the biggest problem is the slowness in between, and that every time something good or funny is happening someone (mostly Spike) ruins it by saying/doing something idiotic. Actually this wasn't nearly as bad episode as I expected, it has been several years since I last saw this ep and I remembered very little of this, so it was a pleasant surprise that there actually were some good lines and moments between the boredom.
I still have not warmed up to the nerds, they are boring, have no charisma, they are not convincing as the villains (at least not yet) and they are rarely funny. I don't care about Andrew's Mission Impossible fantasy and I don't see how the frozen security guard could survive hypothermia long enough for the police/hospital/whoever to use hairdryers to melt the ice around him. I'm already bored with them and Anya sums it up pretty well, they are 'lame'. There isn't much of Xander or Anya in this, it seems that he has a smaller and smaller role as the season goes. But since Xander acknowledges Willow's problem, why isn't he organizing a big intervention since the scoobies love to do those to Buffy?
The mugger scene was actually somewhat funny, this show rarely has human bad guys these days, at least in the none demon related capacity. Also liked the strange metaphors Spike was giving Buffy, but what I don't care about is his “I'm all you've got” bullshit with what he's trying to get her deeper into depression so she's easier pickings for him. Like Buffy said in Crush, the only chance he had with her was when she was unconscious, but it looks like it took her being dead and clinically depressed to get a kiss.
Buffy tries to open up to Willow about her feelings and what is happening with Spike, but then Amy interrupts them and it turns into another Willow patting herself in the back session. Of course if Buffy could open up to her friends she wouldn't feel so detached, so certainly someone had to interrupt her from sharing her feelings so she could get some support from someone. Then again it doesn't mean that Willow would have taken time out from her go-magic! trip to care about other people since at the moment she's all about how all-powerful she is.
Willow is really starting to get on my nerves, she's continuing her destructive behavior despite the fact that it made her lose Tara, but she doesn't even acknowledge the fact why Tara left her and is acting like she did it suddenly without a reason. I have no sympathy for her. And for three years she hasn't had any luck in turning Amy back into human and now she suddenly just know how. Far too easy. But Amy's reaction was good. But it looks like Drew Z. Greenberg (who wrote this) hasn't watched any Amy-episodes or the third season because Amy turned into a rat in 'Gingerbread' which was before Buffy's 18th birthday that is in January 19th, so why is Amy thinking that the prom will be soon since it's several months away? And why was she thinking about asking Larry? There was no signs of that and wasn't he out by that time, at least in Earshot he told Xander that he was and that even his grandmother was fixing him dates.
Continuity errors are nothing new, especially with the new writers, but my opinion on the writer not having seen the early seasons only gets stronger with Amy's changed personality. Just like Willow, she has no problem with messing peoples minds and freewill which is seen at the Bronze when she makes the woman just dumb her girlfriend and come to Willow and later magicking up the whole Bronze, playing with the people in there like they're there just for her and Willow's amusement. Since everyone just returns to normal not showing any signs of remembering what had happened during the time Amy and Willow were playing with them it looks like another forgetting spell was done. And again I have to ask why didn't anyone notice anything weird when Willow and Amy were playing pool without any cue sticks and the balls were moving by themselves. Argh!
Why would Dawn think that Tara and Willow breaking up had anything to do with her, her shoplifting hasn't come out yet and they are not her parents, so the parents divorcing (not so subtle) metaphor does not work for me and Tara's speech comes out lame. And even if Dawn is a complete idiot she should be old/smart enough to have noticed the things that were causing trouble between Tara and Willow and that the reason why Tara left Willow is her overuse of magic and using it to make her forget in Tabula Rasa. And she outright lies to Tara when she says that Willow is really doing a lot better, cutting down magic. It also looks like Dawn really is Joyce's daughter since the laying of the guilt is inherited straight from the master herself, but the funny thing is that I wasn't all that annoyed with her since Willow and Spike were far more obnoxious than her.
Probably the best part of the whole episode is when Buffy tells Spike that she was thinking about Giles when she kissed him and Spike's response to it: “You know, I always wondered about you two”, simply hilarious. But then Spike ruins the funny moment by continuing to harass Buffy. Same happens with his phone call to the Magic Box, first it's funny as Spike tries to be ominous but Buffy isn't playing along and since once again it looks funny and promising Spike has to go back to pushing his own agenda and ruin it.
But back to where Spike realizes his chip “isn't working”, I don't think he is convincing himself to kill the girl because he now suddenly has goodness in him, his first instinct after finding out that he can hurt Buffy was to go to kill a innocent girl, he's talking to himself to give himself a pep-talk because he's been neutered for so long, not because of a conscience. Also it's not the first time he's distracted from maiming, like in Lovers walk he was shifting between threatening Willow and crying about Drusilla. And even though Spike threatening the life of a action figure was funny, I'm annoyed that now just anybody can work with the chip.
You can really just feel the love when Spike hits Buffy and taunts her how she returned wrong, that she's not human anymore. That was sarcasm. This would be a good time to bring back Mister Pointy and stake Spike, he should have been dusted in Primeval when it was shown that he still could be a threat, but now he really is dangerous. But gotta say that Sarah Michelle Gellar does excellent job with the drama, like she often does, you really can see Buffy's conflict, fear and every other emotion when she finds out Spike can hit her.
Okay, I'm a B/Aer, always have been and always will be, so please don't lynch me when I say that the ending scene was well done. I didn't think it was hot or anything because there is nothing hot about violence, Buffy and Angel were more steaming with simple tai chi in Revelations than this, but I do like the way the scene was filmed with the music playing over the sounds as the house kept cracking and falling down. Not as bad episode as I was expecting, but not anything great either.

Jasmine... Gina Torres

Summary:

Coming Soon...

After several great episodes it's disappointing to see a boring episode like this one. I like Gina Torres, but the only reason she was cast into the role of Jasmine was because of Joss Whedon's obsession with Firefly, she is a good actress, but she can't hold the episode together simply because Jasmine is a brand new and simply boring character (and like Caleb probably just made to give a Firefly actor a job). The whole episode is very dialog centered and again the problem surfaces with the fact that the dialog isn't very gripping, it's just constant talking. And after watching everyone bow down to Cordelia I'm really not interested at seeing everyone, especially Angel kneeling and worshiping Jasmine (or any other character for that matter).

Fred questions why the evil thing didn't pick a horrible evil person to born in, I know I'm terrible and bitter, but who says that Jasmine didn't choose a evil person. And Fred has strange priorities, according to her, Angel killing Crappy (sorry, can't use the real name of this incarnation) to save the world is worse than setting the beast master free. Ugh! But while Fred was jumping from Crappy worship to Jasmine worship and into crazy cave girl and back again, Charisma did one of her best performances of the season in a coma (that was evil of me, but she was bad as a saint, but really terrible as the big bad). And after Fred has scrubbed her fingers raw and sees Jasmine's real, gross maggoty face, she runs straight to the subject of her worship, Crappy, I'm starting to suspect that she's the one with the moira and yak dung. Even though she's still hung up on the coma-girl, without Crappy taking all the screen time, Fred is starting to be developed as more than just Gunn's girlfriend and Crappy's cheerleader as is seen when she goes to the hospital to find out if the “crazy guy” saw the same thing as she did. Also the guys face brings to mind Glory's scabby hobbits and his talk about being called the crusaders after the Key.

Angel being all serene and a little giddy is not something I care to see, just when he was getting his smarts back after Angelus' visit then comes Jasmine and he's taken a step back from the two steps forward. And totally off topic, but the yellow stripe shirt looked terrible on him, really not his color. But it's good to see him and Connor finally getting along. And I love the fact that once Gunn got out of his relationship with Fred and his annoying jealousy, he started to get good lines and better personality, like his line “That's definitely gonna help” to Connor's “You'll go nuts”. Interesting that Wesley is the last one to kneel in front of Jasmine, but too bad that it isn't explained why. But I found it very annoying that all Fred's friends were so ready to go and kill her after she saw the truth, I know they were all under Jasmine's spell, but I would have liked to see some love shine through like with Buffy's to Dawn in 'Him'. But even though I liked the ending scene at the café and Fred realizing that she's alone in the world, I'm annoyed with the fact that just like the rain of fire and black out, Jasmine is only affecting LA .

While I found this episode extremely boring, I found it interesting that Jasmine is a former higher power. Who says that the Powers that be are good? And really, despite making everyone worship her and all that does not mean that she is good especially considering how she came to the world.

1.01 Welcome to the Hellmouth
Topic: Btvs Season 1

Written by: Joss Whedon.

Jesse... Eric Balfour
Principal Flutie... Ken Lerner
Joyce... Kristine Sutherland
the Master... Mark Metcalf
Darla... Julie Benz
Luke... Brian Thompson

Summary:

16 year old Buffy Summers moves to Sunnydale and starts in a new school. But things that she is trying to escape from come back to haunt her when a body is found in the school. It appears that Sunnydale isn't a normal town but neither is Buffy just a regular girl, she is the vampire slayer.

The first episode of Buffy ever, when all the characters were still young and innocent, those were the times. This is a great opening episode of a series, it explains all the characters and the slayer mythology without feeling like a boring history lesson. I really liked that this isn't predictable, in the beginning the frightened blonde isn't the one being used, but actually the monster to be feared and the bubbly normal teenage girl turns out to be the only one that can fight those monsters.

Joyce was doing well as a mother up until the point where she said “Try not to get kicked out”, that wasn't very supporting thing to say. But she was playing the good mother later when Buffy was leaving to the Bronze but why hadn't she heard about the dead body found at the school?

Principal Flutie tearing Buffy's file, then taping it back together was funny. Xander was cute as the “bibbling idiot” and Willow is really sympathetic character with her quirky nerdiness and shyness, really felt bad for her when Cordy was bashing her. Really loved the talks between Buffy and Willow, and we got the famous reason why she and Xander broke up. He stole her Barbie, heh. Smile

Cordelia is a perfect bitch, she's the character you love to hate and has some great dialog. Buffy could have become one of the cordette's, a popular cheerleader who tormented Willow and Xander since she had already had Cordelia's approval. But despite being a “retired” slayer, she didn't ignore her duty and sacrificed her “social life” by doing the right thing and becoming friends with Willow, Xander and Jesse. And you can see from the look she gives Cordelia as she's being nasty to Willow that Buffy doesn't really like Cordy's behavior. And it's not hard to mistake Cordelia for a soulless bloodsucker. *Grin*

Did Giles think he gave the vampyr book to the wrong girl when Buffy fled the library? Really loved the interaction between Buffy and Giles, they really have great chemistry and he got a reality check on slayer's life, he did look a little taken back so I guess he hadn't really thought about it from that point of view. Poor Giles really looks out of place in the Bronze in his tweed suit and gotta love that stuttering, “but you didn't... hone”. And for some reason Buffy saying she didn't like the dark, annoyingly gorgeous guy didn't sound very convincing, it always makes me break into a smile.

And Angel. The first time I saw this episode I was really surprised by how young and skinny Angel/DB looked, and lets not forget yummy *swoon*. And the chemistry between Buffy and Angel is unbelievable, the screen was sizzling when they were together. And lets not forget the smirk... Tongue out

Okay, I'm back. Just got a little distracted by the dark, mysterious smirking salty goodness. Lets move on to the characters that don't make me so distracted. Master is a great villain, on my top three of favorites, he's creepy and sometimes kinda funny, “Bring me something... young”. Luke is in a way cliché bad guy but for some reason I like him as a disposable baddie. And in this episode I wasn't as annoyed with Darla as I could be and Buffy could have staked her skanky ass if she hadn't been so busy joking. She should have just “plunge and move on, plunge and...” like Giles instructed in Never kill a boy on the first date. But we'll get to enjoy her turning to dust later. Buffy was a little easily thrown around by Luke, guess she wasn't on the top of her game yet, but the episode ended in a suspending cliffhanger. Where was the cross-necklace that Angel gave her?
